Custom precision-machined core pins on brushed steel

Custom Core Pins

A core pin forms the internal geometry of a molded or cast part: through-holes, blind holes, cores, and internal features the cavity cannot create on its own. Precision Core Pins manufactures custom core pins to your print in Orange County, California, for medical, aerospace, and electronics tooling.

Made to your print

Send a drawing or a sample pin and we match it exactly: diameter, overall length, head style, point or tip geometry, and shoulder. We grind core pin diameters from 0.004 in up to 1.5 in. For longer work, we also make mandrels up to 12 feet. We handle one-off replacements for a mold that is down as well as repeat production sets.

How we make them

Core pins are precision ground to size on the working surfaces to hold tolerance. We hold ground diameters as tight as 0.00005 in. Centerless, cylindrical (OD), ID, surface, form, and thread grinding are all in-house.

Common applications

Plastic injection molds, die-cast dies, and multi-cavity medical tooling.

Frequently asked questions

What is a core pin? A core pin is a pin that forms internal geometry in a molded or cast part: through-holes, blind holes, cores, and features the cavity cannot create on its own.

What is the difference between a core pin and an ejector pin? A core pin forms a feature in the part; an ejector pin pushes the finished part off the core when the mold opens. We make both. (More on the difference.)

Can you match a sample without a drawing? Yes. Send the pin and we reverse it to a print and quote.

Do you do single replacement pins? Yes. We make single replacements and full repeat sets to your print or a sample.

How small a core pin can you make? We grind core pin diameters down to 0.004 in. For long work, we also make mandrels up to 12 feet.

What tolerances can you hold? We hold ground diameters as tight as 0.00005 in. The exact tolerance depends on the feature, so send your print and we will confirm what we can hold for your part.
